Group rate cutoff is July 14.

Our traditional Friday morning tour will be at the National World War II Museum. the father-in-law of Joe Leimkuhler, a veteran of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, has volunteered to be our guide.

The meeting will begin Friday, Aug 11, with an evening welcome reception at the Hyatt.

We have an especially exciting—and controversial—banquet speaker: Dr. Andrew Wakefield. He is the director of a new film Vaxxed: from Cover-up to Catastrophe, which was (not quite totally) banned in Phoenix. His work is calling attention to a national disaster: the loss of about one in 68 children—and two out of 100 boys—to an autism spectrum diagnosis. Still more are lost to other types of neurologic impairment. Many of these children will be unable to function normally in their lifetime, and will require constant care from others.

While billions of dollars are being spent on Zika virus, with a few dozen cases reported so far in the U.S., and there are frequent news reports, relatively little is said about 1 million new diagnoses of autism every year. So far, autism has not been blamed on climate change (although doctors are urged to fight climate change, as a high priority to protect our health). There are no prominent theories about what might cause autism, but public health authorities assert that there is absolutely no link between autism and the great increase in the number of vaccines.

Andrew Wakefield is Public Enemy Number 1, according to public health authorities, because of a 1998 report in The Lancet of 12 cases of regressive autism following MMR vaccine. He recommended further study and consideration of separate measles and rubella vaccines.

The movie Vaxxed concerns a study that apparently shows a statistically significant increase in autism in black boys in Atlanta who received MMR as recommended at 18 months compared with those who were vaccinated at 36 months. According to a senior CDC scientist turned whistleblower, the CDC is suppressing the evidence. Malfeasance by the CDC, if it has occurred, is a disaster going far beyond the instant case.

Other confirmed speakers include John Dale Dunn, M.D., J.D., who is expert on the Environmental Protection Agency’s distortion of evidence on small particulates; “statistician to the stars” William “Matt” Briggs, Ph.D., author of Uncertainty: the Soul of Modeling, Probability & Statistics; Willie Soon, Ph.D., who can talk about censorship and intimidation in climate science; Steven Hatfill, M.D., on forecasting for emerging diseases; Craig Idso, Ph.D. on the expected impact of rising CO2 levels on the biosphere; Norbert Rempe on the effects of Chernobyl and Fukushima; Carol Henricks, M.D., on traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and veteran suicide. Other stars from previous meetings include Paul Driessen, Art Robinson, Ph.D., Howard Hayden, Ph.D., Kenneth Haapala, and Joe Leimkuhler. The program is still in development—watch for a draft schedule and registration form soon.

Remember that young people are especially welcome—we will try to arrange scholarships for interested students.

The U.S.P.S. is not to blame for your not receiving the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness Newsletter or Civil Defense Perspectives. Nor is there a lack of issues to write about. The raw materials are in piles on my floor. The forthcoming fifth edition of Sapira’s Art and Science of Bedside Diagnosis has taken priority for the past year. Newsletters should resume after May 2017. There has also been an extraordinary amount of work related to the election and “health care reform.” On medical topics you may want to follow the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (www.aapsonline.org) and its journal (www.jpands.org). Its twitter handle is @aapsonline, and Facebook page is www.facebook.com/patientpower.

While we do not at the moment have a recently written newsletter to send, we enclose a remarkably (and frighteningly) current talk by the late Phyllis Schlafly from the 1966 meeting of AAPS. Many things have not changed since then: We still have no anti-missile defense—and many Americans probably still think that we do. I think Mrs. Schlafly was misinformed on one point concerning the superiority of the Soviets in megatonnage. The Soviets may have tested a 20 MT bomb, but didn’t deploy them because 20 weapons of 1 MT could do far more damage—there is no point in pounding the rubble.

Today’s world is far more dangerous. Yet which of our leaders can match the insight that this young mother had in 1966?

We hope to see you in New Orleans in August. Watch www.ddponline.org for earliest updates.
